Hi Don I prefer fiberglass tape personally to the old paper tape. But, yes, some type of tape needs to be applied over the seems between sheets of drywall before mud is applied.

taping is used to connect 2 pieces of drywall. it covers the seam and you get a smother wall. most drywall i've done the edge is tapered to accept the tape and then the mudding is done.

Yes, 1st lightly plaster the seam. Then apply tape and more plaster. Let dry completely. Then sand to smooth.

Yes, you need tape, but there are different kinds. Try a big box store and see which is best for you.

I like the mesh tape because it has a sticky back and stays in place while I struggle to smooth my first layer of mud. (smoother mud means less sanding)

I agree with KC. The mesh is easy to place and allows the joint compound to get a better "grip" on the drywall. It makes a better bond than trying to just fill joints with compound alone.

Yep. I use the mesh tape. Sticky on one side so no need to apply compound to embed it. Just stick over the seam then mud.

You need it for any seam however it's come a long way. There is a fiberglass tape that is so much better than the original paper or the newer mesh.
