How about a patio shade sail? There are at least three articles about them here on hometalk (just type in "sail" in the search bar above). You can mix and match different fabrics and sails to cover whatever size area you want.
You can also get supplies and hardware from Sailrite. Their website offers fabulous step-by-step how-to videos on this and many other outdoor living projects.

If you already have outdoor fabric, buy a grommet kit ($8.00) and put your own holes in your material. Use either rope, carbine clips or even zips ties which are much cheaper and come in various sizes.
