Is this a front loader?
Run a load with a bleach cycle. Your washer might have a sanitize cycle. Do that.
Keep the door open after use to let it air dry. If there's a soap dispenser drawer keep that open too when not in use.
I think there is a ready made product made for just this problem, available at home stores, which is run through on a separate cycle. It should clean right up. For best results, it is used every so often or after every so many uses. It’s not expensive or there is a potion with vinegar you can make yourself. It can be found on Google
Besides cleaning your washing machine (they make the cleaners for standard, upright, and he washers), how long has it been since you checked the pipes and tubing coming in to that area? Do you have a laundry tub that is getting black mold water too? How old is the washer? Has it been sitting for a long time?
There are a lot of questions...hopefully you don’t need a plumber 👨‍🔧!
If you are on well water , put about 1 cup of bleach directly into your well. It will dilute and not affect people, but it well kill the mold. do at least once a year. If you are on city water. contact the city for a system wash. They typically do this once or twice a year. vinegar is good If you have a water softener, do you back wash your system or drain it once a year as recommended? bleach could be added here as well but this is part of the annual flush of your hot water tank.
When was the last time you cleaned your washing machine?
The mold could be coming from where you pour your laundry detergent or fabric softener.
Look in the manual under cleaning your machine and there should be derections on how to clean your washing machine.
I had a washing machine once that the container in the center of the machine (where you added the softener) came off to clean it and there were 2 pieces to clean.
I didn’t know about this part at first when I bought the washer, it wasn’t until we moved to a warm climate that the problem intensified.
Where we moved to the washer & dryer are set up in the attached shed as there was no room inside the mobile home.
Once I realized I had a problem with mold inside my washer, after I cleaned it I always checked it every 2 - 3 weeks to make sure the mold would not come back again.
The reason the mold gets there is the softener or water never really get to completely dry as the 2 parts get moisture between them and no matter how long you keep the washer top open to dry out the washer that part is hard to dry.
Also the softener leaves a slick residual on the plastic that the water in the final rinse can’t completely remove.
fill washng machine with water and add some soap and half a cup of bleach, and let machine goe through it,s cycle.
You can also contact the manufacturer, to ask what they suggest to control the issue. Some of the older models just can't be cleaned well enough no matter what. Good luck!
Thanks for the answers. We are not on a well. I have used the cleaners that are available to clean machine. The softener container, etc is cleaned regularly. I have called LG and they think that it is not the machine. I have never had this problem ever. I am wondering if I need a water softener now that we live in GA (machine is new since we moved here). The washing machine rim etc gets cleaned and bleach cycle is run regularly. Also I use baking soda, vinegar, occasionally also. What I have is black "flecks" of a mold like substance that "freckle" my cloths (especially whites) and darks have like white sort of streaks on them. The white streaks can be wiped off with a wet washcloth but the black flecks are mold and I am not sure if it is in water line to washer or what. The washing machine is 2 years old LG top load model.
Yikes, this IS bad. Seems to be a common problem on front-loaders but yours is worse and seldom happens to top loaders. Sounds like whatever it is has taken residence in your washer and is not coming through the incoming water. City or well water? Is there a whole-house filter? Any issues with the water elsewhere in the house? Don't have a definitive answer for you, just spitballin'.
Is the washer in a dry room or is it wet and musty? (That is were I'd bet my quarter as to the cause. Musty basement not letting the washer dry between uses.) Do you leave the lid open after a wash? Do you wash anything different from what the rest of us wash? Not that it would necessarily do a better job than what you are trying but there are commercial products designed specifically to clean washer tubs. I'll do some more thinking about this but if you can supply any more insight that would be great.
I have the same problem, clean it monthly with clean cycle and store bought cleaner, leave lid open, have it cleaned yearly by maintenance program I bought with it. Still get black flake specs. In basement with dehumidifier running daily. Have water softener. Lg top loader, We bought it specifically to avoid mold problems with front loaders.
I have the same problem and found mold growing in the impeller and on the tube support order replacement parts to fix
