It depends if the area has burnt on grease. I would try some of the products for taking off grrease first. If that doesn't work, and If the surface is brushed stainless steel, you might try using the product that cleans glass cook-tops, testing in a small area that might not be noticed and always working with the grain of the stainless steel if it is brushed stainless steel. If that doesn't work you might be able to get it off with very fine steal wool (hardware stores carry this in various degrees of coarseness) always working with the grain of the stainless steel. It may take awhile if it is very dirty.
Try Bar Keepers Friend. It's not abrasive and works great on stainless
Burnt on grease is tough to remove. For that I would try a steam cleaner first, if you are concerned about chemicals. If this works it will continue to work for other grime.

There is a stainless steel cleaner on the market but I would try baking soda and hot water with a plastic scrubbie first, You could try putting some baking soda on the stains, dampen a little and then cover with a damp cloth for a while. This may soften the stains and then you should be able to remove them with the scrubbie.
Try Bar Keepers Friend. READ instructions and follow them carefully.
On a day to day basis, I use Bar Keepers with the blue sponge. Even the scratchy side does not injure the finish. If it really bad, and I have done this - pour about 1/3 cup ammonia on the top and then put a plastic trash bag over it. Seal it as best you can and let it sit overnight. Next day, you just wipe it off without any energy spent. For the grills, you can place them in a bucket with 1/3 cup ammonia, seal the bucket and in hours, you just rinse them off - comes out like its brand new. See my post on using ammonia to clean stainless. https://www.hometalk.com/diy/clean/ovens/set-it-in-a-bucket-and-forget-it-cleaning-the-rotisserie-back-splash-27888799

Believe it or not, try magic eraser. It may not get all of it, but it may get some of the areas. I use it on my stove top on a regular basis to get off exactly what you have going on (but to a lesser degree). It also is amazing for getting grease off of vent hoods! Thankful that I listened to my mother on this one lol.
