How can I unstop my vacuum?

My vacuum is clogged and I need to clean the hose.

I always remove the hose and push in the longest broom stick I can find, actually the extension handle I use to clean the outside windows. My how is a split entry so they are quite high. The blockage is usually at the beginning of the hose. So push it back out the way it went in.

If you have small toys around the house from kids or pets, its always best to pick them up before vacuuming, as they lodge somewhere in the hose and quickly catch more detritus and voila - another plug.
