How do I get the smell out of my washing machine?

I have a front load LG and noticed a musty smell when I first bought our house. The front gasket clearly had mildew on it. If it's a front load there should be a small drain opening at the bottom of the door gasket. Make sure your gasket is not pooling water, if it is,the drain line is clogged. Look at the owner's manual. You'll likely have a tub clean setting. LG suggests you run the tub clean once a month with bleach for sanitary purposes. If it's horrific you have to replace the gasket. LG had a recall a decade ago on the door gasket which resulted in the musty smell reported by consumers.

My Whirlpool front load washer manual says to run bleach in the washer about every month to six weeks (if you don't have a clean indicator light)....empty, of course. Always leave the door open between loads to air out and dry. I always leave my detergent tray open for a day, to dry out....have had two washers and never had a problem with mold or smell.
