What can I do to remove the old house smell from my 100 year old house
I’ve tried everything, cleaning thoroughly, fabreeze. Mr clean, etc
Not sure what kind of fridge you have but some of them have trays where things collect (I have an older model in my basement and some of the water from the defrost cycle was pooling in a drip tray under the fridge that smelled BAD because the tray was not put in place correctly). You might want to look for hidden places where food or drips could hide.
That depends on what it smells like. But first, have you tried baking soda?
First, rinse off all the surfaces of the fridge - take apart the shelves, remove them and wash out the walls, etc. Also, be sure you are cleaning the freezer as well.
Next, put an open box, or an uncovered bowl, or baking soda in there and just let it stay there.
A quick story - my brother purchased a vacation home just before he was going back home, so did not get a chance to stay in the vaca house (near my home). I went over there to check it about a week later, and the smell was so bad when we opened the door that we were gagging. I thought an animal had died in the house. Turns out, the owner had accidentally left a pkg of chopped meat in the freezer, but turned the power off. The meat defrosted, then dripped out juice all over, including running down INSIDE the back wall of the fridge to the floor. My hubby took the back wall out, scrubbed everything down and after we aired out the place for about a week, the smell finally went away.
So if your smell isn't going away, you might want to take out the back wall of the fridge to be sure there's nothing there. Also, are you sure the smell is in the fridge & not behind or under it? Little critters get into our homes pretty easily and then die.
Good luck!
Carol
Wipe it down with baking soda and water mixture then spray with white vinegar and wipe dry.
Use baking soda to clean, make sure you clean all jars and bottles before putting them back. Leave 1 or 2 open boxes of baking soda in fridge.
Check the freezer to make sure the smell isn't coming from there.
I clean with white vinagor and baking soda paste then wipe with a clean rag
check the tray under the front of the refrigerator , it collects the water from the freezer
Go to your local hardware store or Bed, Bath and Beyond and buy a portable steamer. They are inexpensive, and once a month I remove everything from my fridge and use the steamer without any other cleanser. The refrigerator looks like new and there is absolutely no odor whatsoever.
Try using a mixture of white vinegar and blue Dawn to spray and wipe down the inside, shelves, and drawers.
Newspaper and charcoal bricks
Wrap 2 bricks in newspaper, place in freezer and refig. Leave in for 2 weeks and change if smell isn't gone.
Also pull out the plastic vegetable trays, and there is a drain back there either on the shelf behind or the bottom, Pour some hot water and vinegar in the drain, wait and do again, sponge up any extra. Check the tray beneath the frig grate on the bottom, and remove any excess. Put a box of baking soda with the top open in the frig.
