I saw a cleaning hack for the shower head online. It involves filling a small plastic bag with vinegar and tying it to the shower head so that it stays immersed in the vinegar. Vinegar works great for removing scaling from hard water. I'm not sure how long you're supposed to leave it there, but an hour or two ought to be enough time. If not, put the bag back on the shower head and leave it on a bit longer.

The Easy Way to Clean Your Shower Head
How to Clean, Descale, and Unclog Your Shower Head Naturally!
Hello. I put of vinegar into a plastic bag. The I put that on the shower head and hold it on with a rubber band. Let it sit for a few about 15-20 minutes and then take it off and scrub with a old tooth brush. If there is still a lot on it then let it soak more.
I'd take the shower head down. Vinegar is a mild acid, safe to use but rinsing and washing as much gunk off and out with soap and water first means less time soaking.
