I use hydrogen peroxide when I wash my whites. Stronger than bleach. but won't destroy the fabric or yellow over time. You can use Rit Color Remover to make them white again. It will remove any color and stains.

I make a mixture of half dishwasher powder and half Borax. I make about a gallon at a time and keep a scoop in it. I add this to my washer before I throw my whites in. Then I use my regular detergent and Clorox bleach--only use this combo for whites, never colors. I let the washer fill and the Clorox dispense and the whole thing agitate for a few minutes. Then I let it soak for as long as I can, then finish washing as usual. I started doing this when my sheets and towels just would not get white and the body oils left brownish streaks where we lay on the sheets or wiped our hands on hand towels. I do this every time I wash my white linens and white undershirts. It might take a few washings, but now my whites are actually white and they smell like they have been hung on the line--so fresh!
