How to clean dog urine out of a polyester shag throw rug?

Our sweet senior pooch started having incontinence issues and before we figured out what was happening, she had urinated on my favorite throw rug numerous times. It's 5x7 and made of polyester with an uneven shag design. We've had it professionally cleaned and deodorized twice and have hosed it down, deodorized it, cleaned it with white vinegar, and hung it out in the sun for several days. Nothing seems to be eliminating the smell completely. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi, maybe you could sprinkle a heavy coat baking soda on it and let it sit for a day, shake it off and vacuum and it should help.

I have always had good luck with saturating the area with vinegar and letting it dry. Try starting with the vinegar when the rug is dry and see it that works. Use straight vinegar, not diluted.

I would douse it with an enzyme cleaner made for removing pet urine. I like the tablets you mix with water as its fresher and stronger in removing bad odors, there are lots of these on the market, but why pay for water and they don't work as well. Try soaking it in an oxygenated cleaning solution (OxyClean or Awesome Orange) for a few hours, rinse, then hang outside and let it dry in the sun.
