    A mixture of baking soda and essential oil, sprinkled on the dry area. Simply mix a cup of baking soda and a few drops of your favorite essential oil in a jar. Poke holes in the lid and sprinkle. Make sure the spot is dry. Putting a cup of vinegar in a bowl and sitting it next to this spot. I have used a mixture of one part white vinegar to six parts water, drop of dawn dish soap, mix and put in a spray bottle. I use this for lots of things, including these spots.

    First have the carpet cleaned. Then get into the habit of using baking soda (Arm and Hammer makes scented product) and vacuum or even hand vacuum the rug. Spray disenfectant (Lysol) directly on the rug. And for added protection, put a a crate liner or piece of cloth where your pet likes to lounge. Good luck.
