Advice for Preserving old handprint?

My mother in law passed away when my husband was a child and his Aunt has given us some wonderful things that belonged to her! Amongst the relics, is a 1960s gold painted handprint that she made in school.
That's where our problem lies, it's starting to crumble..is there anything we can do to keep it from happening more?!
Any help MUCH appreciated!

Maybe take to library n have it laminated? -

Oh no, sorry about that. Do you have any idea what the hand prints are made of or on top of? Depending on the surface maybe you could get someone to encase them in resin for you? -

I would use clear glaze from Michael"s or Hobby Lobby.
