Removing polyurethane

I purchase a marble-topped coffee table for $5 because someone put polyurethane over the marble so it wouldn't chip. I want to remove it but not sure how. Any suggestions? (I thought of sanding it off with a fine sandpaper but then I might lose the finish of the marble.)

I would try an all natural water based furniture stripper. Use a plastic scrapper not metal. Try products on the underside if you can. Good luck - I'm sure it can be done somehow. I would not sand it with fine sandpaper.

@Cindi Rahier I found this on a google search. http://www.countertopspecialty.com/polyurethane-stained-marble-entryway.html You need to be careful when removing it so that the marble isn't harmed.
