Burnt sugar in this pot. Is it a goner?

Was making a cooked sugar recipe and (yes, stupidly) walked away to answer the door for a moment. I've tried boiling it with baking soda and got a lot off the sides but the bottom is still black. Is it (and the thermometer) a goner? Any suggestions on how to clean a burnt pot???

Vinegar?
Try putting baking soda in the pan, and pour white vinegar in the pan. Let sit over night.
Scrap off as much as you can first. Then I use steel scrubbie pads which ae larger loosely meshed scrubbies, (not sos as they are to small) first and get off as much as possible. Then I follow that up with the finely meshed sos pads. Never had a problem so far. You can also use salt which is an abrasive, mixed with warm water and an sos pad to get it extra clean.....

Believe me......I have ALOT of experience with this problem ;) This is my go to method. Sometimes I have to repeat the process....but very rarely.

I've always had great success with the method my grandmother taught me. Cover burn with about inch of water. Liberally sprinkle with Cream of Tartar. (Cream of Tartar can be found in the grocery baking section.) Cover pan with lid and bring to a boil. Then let simmer slowly for about hour or longer. Wash as usual. You can repeat if necessary, but so far I've never had too.
