cleaner of choice..I like 50/50 water and vinegar..soak paper toweling in cleaning solution. Wrap it securely arround / on the trouble spots. Let sit 30 to 60 min. Come Back with a non scratch scrubby and scrub. It may take a few days of doing this daily to get it all off.

Don Aslett has a product called Safety Foam (Amazon). It's for cleaning toilets, but it just dissolves water spots/calcium around faucets. If I question the safety of using it on something, I'll put a bit on a tooth brush and brush that on. Only takes a few seconds. Then quickly rinse off. I've never had a problem with granite, but I know that marble is very porous. It's a really great product I use in my cleaning business. Smells good and doesn't hurt your hands either.

Dip a rag in white vinegar and let that soak over the faucet overnight to remove the build up and stains

Yup! I am cheap, so I also use vinegar overnight. If you have a one sided razor blade (like to remove paint) and you are careful, you can get under the deposits and scrape most of it off, then use vinegar. I cleaned military quarters in Germany for 4 years and now I always have that tool. Also great for scraping up gunk from the bottom of your oven and leaves very little to have to clean up.
