    WD-40, carburetor spray cleaner, on a rag.

    You can also try rubbing alcohol on a rag

    remove and soak in ammonia - did this with all my old brass knobs and they shone like new

    I had the old Victorian etched glass door knobs. I used Easy off Fume free spray-on oven cleaner. Put them and the hardware into a low plastic storage tote. Sprayed over all of them (keep shaking the can while you spray) Gets into all the nooks and crannies beautifully. Covered the “tote” with the tote top but didn’t snap it on. Let it work it’s foamy magic for 30 minutes then wiped it all off with a micro-fiber cloth. Turned out fabulous and even wound up salvaging the tote and the cloth because you can clean up in soap and water! Win win
