How do you remove adhesive from bricks?

I’m planning on staining the fireplace bricks. I need to remove all the tar like glue that was used to glue a piece of paneling over the bricks when the house was built in 1958.

If the glue is really old 40s 50s 60s, you can try super hot water and just keep washing the brick. I removed black glue from the floor when I pulled up old linoleum with hot water. May I suggest an old vinyl table cloth covered by an old towel to absorb water from the floor. Goo Gone may help too. -

If none of that works, muriatic acid could do the trick. It is powerful concrete type cleaner. Be sure to protect your eyes and skin if you decide to use it. Be sure to protect the floor in that area. -
