If it comes off I would let it soak in vinegar and baking soda. The combo gives a foaming non-toxic scrub. If it doesn’t come off I would vacuum with sweeper attachment and use same formula on a rag to wipe clean.

I would think that the best way would be to use a ladder to get up there, unscrew the cover and take it down to clean. If you want to clean the ducts while you're there, first put on a dust mask and goggles to protect yourself. then you'll need a powerful vacuum that can get up there and deep into the ducts so it must have a very long hose. If you just want to clean the cover you can probably do it with a broom. If you want the whole thing cleaned but don't have the tools to use, you can try to rent them or call a professional.

About once a year I take down about 6 air vents and put them in the dishwasher with dishwasher soap! Yup! They come out spotless. Then I run the dishwasher again with just vinegar to clean it and that's it! I also do that with light globes.

Unscrew the air duct covers or grilles from the walls. Use your brush to clean the grates thoroughly. If they're very dusty and grimy, you may want to use soap and water to make them gleam. Vacuum the ducts as much as possible. Clean the grilles in your ceiling. If you can't reach them with the vacuum or screwdriver, use a broom to attack the dust. It's a good idea to wear a mask while doing this.

Purchase a webster. It's a round bristle ball on and extension pole. They work great for vaulted ceilings and air vents.

You can remove the grill. It is attached by two screws. Clean it and reattach. If you want to clean the duct work, hire a professional.

Thanks all. I can not climb a later and I have been using a broom. I must look for a Webster at home depot. I have not tried the vacuum, that is next.
