I sell a lot of silver on Ebay. Jewelry, silverware, serving sets. Silver polish like Wrights and dips like TarnX tend to remove some of the metal. The foil method doesn't work that great and still leaves a grey film that still needs to be removed. I use white toothpaste (not gel) and a damp toothbrush. For large items I use a damp cloth. Also works on copper, brass, gold, porcelain, ceramics, sneakers, plastics, etc. For my sales I needed one product for cleaning everything.
A word of advice, using the aluminum foil hack will remove a small amount of the silver from the pieces each time you use this method. They also get a gray residue that is hard to get off sometimes. Plain old fashioned toothpaste with no additives like baking soda, gel, whiteners, etc. will not harm the pieces and also rinses off a lot easier with warm water. Use a rag for flat parts and a toothbrush for the finer details. I hate to see you harm your silver over time. Also, sometimes if you are cleaning your flatware, the knives are silver plate so that they aren't so heavy and the aluminum foil hack will greatly reduce the life of the silver plate.
Thanks for the advice
I am with Nancy. My Mom was into purchasing Antique silver most of her life--I am fortunate --she ONLY polished, and had me polish, with Wrights Silver cream. Do not store in plastic bags--get silver cloth from fabric store--a little will line a drawer and be a big help to you and the silver.
TOTALLY agree.
