How do I clean very badly stained copper pot bottoms

I bought some very nice but very badly stained copper bottomed pots and pans at a estate sale, my husband thinks that they are also stained by a gas stove.

Tomato paste and salt, scrub and scrub then wash off with soap and water. They will look like new! When they get dingy again just scrub again with the tomato paste and salt. I have a copper washtub that i use this on once or twice a year.

Start with a copper scrubber, and when you've got most of the black off, use a copper cleaner or ketchup and salt.

Use Barkeepers Friend powder. I buy it at Walmart. Works on copper, stainless steel and porcelain.

I use lemons and salt. I just cut a lemon in half, dribble some juice on the pot bottom, sprinkle salt, and then using one half of the lemon as a scrubber, I scrub away. It usually doesn't take much effort.

Any natural acidic product (lemon, vinegar, ketchup) combined with salt will work. The salt is a 'scrubber' and doesn't harm the finish. And it is very easy to rinse off.

I ended up with my grandma's set of copper bottom pans. She always kept the copper bottom's clean by using Barkeepers Friend Scouring powder. When I do the dishes, I'll use it if the pan needs it. My husband could care less.

sprinkle with salt, lay a paper towel over it to keep salt from washing off, then sprinkle towel with white vinegar. The chemical reaction will clean the copper safely without scratching it. I do this all the time even on my antique tea pot.
