Removing labels from unfinished wooden cigar boxes

I've been given some old, unfinished wooden cigar boxes that still have parts of the labels on them. These boxes are rough feeling, so I don't think that they have been finished in any way. How can I finished removing the remainder of the labels before I paint or stain the boxes? Thanks for the help and ideas in advance!

You could try wallpaper stripper.

Hi Susie. I just did some stripping of one of my old cigar boxes. I used water and an exacto knife and it worked great.
