Mix together two parts salt with one part lime juice in a bowl. Apply the paste to the rusted areas of the counter top with a paper towel or sponge. Wait two to three hours. The lime juice has citric acid that breaks down the rust. The salt's abrasive properties scrub at the rust.
Dampen a scrubbing pad and scrub at the paste and the rust in a circular motion. Rinse out the pad and clean off the paste and rust. Dry the counter top with a paper towel.
Depending on what your counter top is made with...check out a product called, "Whink", it is awesome stuff for rust! Be sure to read the label thoroughly so nothing gets ruined (its tough stuff). You can get it at Walmart, good luck!

I second the motion on Whink. I have used it for many years on tile, formica, porcelain, and cloth. The only thing I ever ruined was a brass colored pop up drain in the bathroom. It turned silver, but my handy hubby was able to replace it.
I would first try using a moistened Mr. Clean Magic Eraser sponge. If that doesn't work, then pour some C-L-R (calcium-Lime-rust) remover onto the spots. It is sold in the house cleaning department of nearly all stores. It's in a small lime green plastic bottle with black letters across it C-L-R.
Hell Helen, hope this helps you. Sprinkle some baking soda on the rust mark and spray with white vinegar, use a cloth to scour the rust stain, repeat if necessary
Rustoleum makes a rust remover also.
CLR works very well in eliminating rust. You can find it at Walmart and diy stores.
