How can you keep the mold and slime out of a bird bath?

Please help, I need to know how to clean a birdbath. I live in Florida and my birdbath gets so black on the bottom that a wire brush does not clean it. I have tried baking soda and comet. The only thing that works is pressure washing, but not likely to do that each month.

I heard pennies prevents from happening. however I haven't try it yet. -

if it's concrete, once you get it pressure washed and really clean -- seal it!! then rinse/wipe/refill every week; you don't want to grow mosquitoes or provide dirty water for the birds -

Is the birdbath near an electrical source that would allow for a small pump to keep the water moving? If not, can you purchase a solar fountain pump to achieve some movement in the water -

I empty my bird bath every few days, rinse it out (swipe it with a brush if needed) and refill. Once a month is not enough to keep the water clean.
