My question as I watched these grandparents was always, "Why are you sweeping your yards, and why is there no grass around your house?" We have grass around ours.
There are various concoctions all containing rubbing alcohol as the active ingredient. As for the mix, higher percentage alcohol=more ice melting. Some recommend 50/50 with water, but some bottled alcohol is already 50%. You could add a little dish liquid, but I cannot see how that would help. Wouldn't hurt.

scrape with an old credit card or spatula
just saw this on tv...use a 50/50 mixture of rubbing alcohol and water and pour over the icy windshield
Before yo get out of car, Open the vents below the dashboard.
You can get de-icer in a spray at auto stores or Wal-Mart. You can also pour COLD water on it and turn the wipers on. If you start your car ahead of time, turn your heater on and your defroster but this takes more time. I used the de-icer spray when I drove a school bus. It’s great! Just depends on your budget. If you have a water hose near where you park your car that would be great. Make sure your car is running and defroster and wipers are on.
Just the other day I saw our neighbor chopping at his windshield to get the ice off. That is such a bad idea. It is an excellent way, however, to have your windshield break right on the spot. The best thing to do is to start your car and let it warm up for five or 10 minutes With the defrost on high. Then take your scraper and scrape the accumulated ice off very easily.
There are also windshield washer solutions sold that contain antifreeze. Do not rely on the ones that claim they are for year 'round. They freeze in the windshield washer container under your hood, and do not work when you pour them on ice.
I use Prestone Winshield Deicer. It works great. You can get it at Walmart.
