What a coincidence. I typed your words in a Google search and the brand that showed up over and over is Earth Friendly Ice Melt. Looked at the ingredients and it's not something that you can whip up in the bathtub. It is available in a number of retail outlets.
Cat litter.
I don't know about ice melt, but I make my own earth using earthworms and kitchen waste that is not meat or grease.
Use sand or kitty litter.
I keep kitty litter in the trunk in case we get stuck on ice and loose traction.
