How do you get rid of foul odor in storage closet of a new house?

I recently purchased a house and one room has a horrible odor. I have spent so much money on many things and the odor is still there. What do I do?

Is it possible that something died behind the wall(s) like a mouse? I remember as a child that a mouse was killed when a drawer was closed on it, and after a few days the smell was awful. My mother tracked it down to the drawer. What an odor - PU!
Charcoal will work if you can locate where the odor is coming from.
Could it be that something died in the walls of the closet, or ceiling?
Could be something dead, could be something like rot. Check floor and wall for soft spots. May need to go under house to check for rot there too. A lot depends of the smell. Did previous owner have a pet, especially cat? Cat urine that has soaked into floor is horrible. Try scrubbing with bleach or other product like pine sol. If it is carpeted pull up carpet and cut at doorway. As a last resort try placing an old towel dampened with bleach and leave to dry with door closed.
You can put charcoal in the room to take care of the smell. Put the charcoal on paper plates around the room. Don't cover it. But if you don't find the source, the smell may come right back. You should probably pull up the carpet to see if there are any stains under it. Best of luck to you.
No carpet in the room, linoleum. I have put charcoal and lime and bleach and even used “thieves oil”!! I have tried everything I can think of or google!! I am beginning to think I need an excorcism!!
