How can I get stains off of windows after removing aluminium foil?

we had covered our windows with wet aluminium foil as a temporary privacy measure before we hung curtains. Now there is a film which I cannot remove with a soft scourer or steamer. any suggestions? my next step is to try a ceramic cooktop cleaner

Take it easy, as you’re doing. Glass can be chemically etched and scratched.
Have you tried 70% alcohol on it? Acetone?
(I know how crazy this sounds) Try rubbing an inconspicuous spot with raw, cut potatoe and see if that works.

You wrote, wet-applied. Was that just tap water?
Try compound for cars, it can sometimes help with light scratches in glass.
