Hi Mildred, Books with a message always make a great gift. Children love to be read to, and 3 is a perfect time to start teaching them good and acceptable behavior, helps them to understand how others feel and helps develop feelings of empathy for others.

    Good luck!

If yo go to a toy department, you will see on the front of most packaged toys, an age range or at least one number stating what age the product is appropriate for.
Or you can ask the child.

Hello, is this a girl or a boy? Do you just want something they can play with or do you want it to be educational.

There are many toys out, that are fun, and educational, but you have to watch recalls and small parts. I know many of toys I bought my sister's children, but I don't know what age they were, their 46&48, long time ago. Go to a toy store and browse around and look for gifts that are for their age group. Get something that will keep them interested for awhile. Their attention span is very limited. I wish I'd remember the name of the toys. If it's a girl, don't buy a doll, buy something that moves. A bubble popper, gets them to walk and the balls pop. Good Luck.

Memory match games are great at that age. They have all kinds of them from simple pictures to numbers and letters. My 3 year old grandson loves puzzles that have magnets in them that come with a fishing pole to put catch the fish and put them back in the puzzle base. Also making slime is a big hit. Playdough is another great one to give. A box of simple craft supplies.... with safety scissors, paper, glue sticks and don't forget the scotch tape, for some reason that is always a huge hit.

Books, even from a thrift store are new to them. Kids that age don't need brand names. Basic toys hold their interest. AND if the parents are in need - clothes are always appreciated.

Lots of great puzzles also come in ABCs and numbers to help little ones near the beginning stages of reading, writing and counting.
