My kids and I want to go hiking and find items to make a wreath. How would I attach it all together?

you can get a wire frame at any Walmart, hobby store and this time of year, maybe a $ store. Florist wire, hot glue, ribbon, etc. to attach items; save the frame for next year --- or get a foam, straw or grapevine wreath and toss when season is over .

Buy a wire, straw or stick wreath from JoAnn or Michaels or other craft store. Then you can either wire or hot glue the items you collect to the wreath frame.

    Hi Kate,

I love making wreaths! Your best way is to get a styrofoam form at the craft store...round for traditional wreath, or a rectangle for different shape.

I find that getting a pack of wooden skewers at the grocery or craft store to attach to greenery so you can insert the sharp point into the styrofoam is a big help. You will need florist tape (or masking tape if you have it) and perhaps some florist wire...all can be found at the craft store. And having a glue gun is a big help sometimes too. (Keep in mind that one of those wooden skewers can serve as an extra finger to guide something in place while it keeps your finger from getting burned by a hot glue...I always have one handy. )

You will have to cut the skewers to size with a pair of cutting pliers!

Pinecones can be drilled and put on a skewer, held in place by hot glue. You can cut off the bottom of the pine cone, take out some of the layers and make flowers which you can glue into place.

Sweetgum balls also make good decorations for a wreath. Paint them different colors or just use them natural.

BTW, be sure and tie a cord around the top of your circle or block to use as a hanger before you start to fill in.

Crooked sticks painted white look good in wreaths! Here is a picture of my small Christmas Tree that has sticks in it! With my kids and grandson grown, I no longer put up a large tree. Greenery of all sorts works.

Keep in mind you can fill in the form, and then go up and out the top on one side and down and out on the opposite side.

Here is my "tin can" wreath for this year. I saw this on line and knew I had to make one. Drilled holes in the bottom of the cans and ran them on an opened coat hanger! (Round cans roll so I stuffed them with paper to keep them in place!) When making wreaths, you just do what pleases you!!!

Decorated with Dollar Tree Ornaments and a few things I had around. I hung it on the front door this morning!!!

Use a straw or woven wreath. Attach wet moss with florist wire wrapped under and over the wreath. Then add small bunches or larger branches using the wire again to fix on. The moss will keep the foliage moist.

  • You could get a boxwood wreath and then wire or glue on the items in strategic places or you could get a grapevine wreath, very natural, and hot glue the items on that as well.
