You can buy what are called "spade" bits in a variety of sizes that would work. You can also get a cheap set of hole saws, the kind used to cut holes in doors for locksets. Use the 3" size and just go as deep as you want. Then you will need to chisel out the wood in the center of the cut.
Buy a Hole Saw Kit. You Cut out 3 qty 3" Circles after cutting out the .75" to 1.5" circle, glue those together and you have a Candle holder.
While you are at it and have xtra wood, also make yourself a Candle maker. You need 17 of the .75 inch thick Pine to make 12 inch tall candles. Save your 17 cut outs.
Hi there, the easiest way would be to use a spade drill bit. Here's an example on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/Bosch-DSB5013P-13-Piece-Daredevil-Spade/dp/B002GU6QAA/ref=sr_1_5?crid=C87RAK93SKX7&keywords=spade+drill+bits+for+wood&qid=1654362374&sprefix=spade+drill%2Caps%2C383&sr=8-5.
