There are a couple ways it can be done... If it has a finish on it, it can be stripped, sanded, then refinished. If it something you'd like to paint, it can be sanded then painted however you choose. Or, it can be lightly sanded and finished with a clear sealer showing off its "natural" state... I hope this helps!
If the finish isn't good, you may want to sand it and then give it a finish. You could leave the wood the way it is and give it a coat of wax or tung oil. If you want to change the color, you could stain it before applying a protective coating.
