Any suggestions for painting lampshades?

I have several lamp shades of different materials, shapes and sizes but I need some new, fresh looks and ideas. Mostly I am wondering if I can paint them somehow and what kind of paint to use. Thank you in advance. T

I've been wondering the same. What I've read is that the lampshade and be spray painted, but lightly and probably more than one layer.

I had a very boring lamp shade and I cut out stars from black paper and taped them to the inside of the shade. When the lamp is turned on you see all the stars. Quite impressive! You can use what ever shape you like. You can also find stickers with shapes you like and stick them inside thus avoiding tape. Also I have covered shades with material to match the decor.

I've spray-painted lampshades and they looked good, but they filtered the light more than I would have liked. Depending on your tastes, you could also remove the fabric from the shades and use the frames to support something else entirely.

I have painted lamp shades with almost every paint imaginable and had mixed results. One thing, make SURE the lamp shade is as clean as possible. Lint and other things that look like nothing before you paint will show up as glaring imperfections when you paint. You can also cover the shade with nifty things. When I was in my nautical phase I used raffia and seashells. My funky phase brought out vintage ties that I glued to the shade and then spray painted gold. It was amazing! The patterns on the ties remained even though the ties were gold. Basically just look at the lamp base and your surrounding area for influence and go for it!

@Shelley Thanks Shelley! Especially useful about no "glaring" imperfections! :-)
