You can buy glass stones or squares in the Dollar Shops or if you want to use glass or plates, put them into an old pillow case and use a gentle tap to break them. Hope this is helpful. -

My grandmother used automotive glass. Sent the grandson's to the scrap yard for it. She wrapped it in a sheet and whacked it with a hammer. The pieces were the perfect size and they don't splinter like regular glass. -

I like using broken ceramics like plates and cups etc. Thrift stores and yard sales are perfect sources -
