I alway use small nail in 2 x 4. You can also use command strips but sometimes items fall...not real crazy about them for everything. Once you use the small nail you can use filler for the tiny hole, wipe then dab paint over. Works well for me!
If its light weight you can use a needle, slanted downward, but I suggest using two about 4"- 5" apart. Then your picture will stay straight.
