You can try to use a heat gun to soften the glue, or put them in the freezer and try to break the bond.
I don't know of any way to stain over hot glue. Could you get a similar affect by spray painting?
I have trimmed off hot glue with a razor blade. Just be careful to lay it flat on a steady surface before working to cut off glue. If you have an Exacto knife, it would be better.
BUY NEW popsicle sticks! The work involved to removed the glue is ridiculous!
They're cheap and even if you get the glue off... staining might not work.
