Hi, Walmart sells plastic lids for mason jars. If you want the metal look, you could used some silver Rub n buff to cover the lid. If you don't like the thought of plastic, you can try spraying them with a clear lacquer spay. Just make sure to let it dry completely. Other than that, being metal and wet, it will always tend to rust.
Good luck!
Rustolium makes a great clear protection spray .
Wax the lids first. Rust is caused because metal has some level of moisture. You may have to re-wax after a few uses. Hope this helps you. Good luck.
will the clear spray effect the sealing of the jar?
I am an avid canner. The lids rust after time. I purchase new ones at the first sign of rust.
Try a little clear nail polish where it tends to rust to help extend the amount of time it will last before rusting. It will eventually rust if it's exposed to water regularly though.
Thanks everyone for your help. Think I'll try a few of these suggestions.
Surprised nobody has suggested stainless steel rings. They never rust. Problem solved. Just Google: "rust proof mason jar lids"
