I want to update my ceiling fan, any ideas?

You can remove the blades and spray paint them.

I removed mine and painted them with regular latex paint and then covered them in a wipe on poly. They look great.

All of those ideas sound great but, if you want a metal look like chrome or stainless you can spray paint with one of those wonderful paints that look like metal. I have a chrome fan that looks like a propeller and another in the kitchen looks like stainless. The blades are made of some cheap wood looked like cardboard. Ha. You might need to paint the hardware.

I agree with Gail. Paint the brass whatever metallic color you like as well as the fan blades. You could also purchase decorative fan blades.

We made a square border on the ceiling and put 12 inch mirrors inside the square painted the wood the color of the fan and changed the glass shades looks awesome . everyone loves it . With constantly cleaning to blades you may have to paint them many times
