Electric companies usually have empty cable spools. Find out if they will sell one to you. Cut it in half and use it as your headboard. My late husband did that for us. Perfect and perfect for the queen sized bed.

We were fortunate enough to get a large barn door with the old hardware still on it. We cleaned it up and use it for our headboard. It looks great! Also another headboard idea is go to a place you can buy, or possibly be given, a large wooden spool. The kind phone cables are wound up on. They come in all sizes, even as large and what would work on a king size bed. Depending on how high your ceilings are, you've got 2 options. Take the round end off the spool. You can paint it, stain it, design on it like crazy by using it whole or cut in 1/2! One idea I used once that was great looking is where you paint a sun on it! Use your own creativity on how you make it look. I had rays coming out all around my big yellow sunshine!!

You can use an old door - shutters- or other architectural pieces. Or you can just paint an area on your wall - outline it with a darker color. Wood can also be a great use for a headboard! So many options , so little time!

I used willow branches in a curved position to make my headboard.

  • A large fence section, painted and stenciled would be very pretty.
