Liz: I think you meant silver-ish... and not the color of an insect. If so, here's a good starting point:

Give the wood a light sanding and a good cleaning. Apply a coat of primer and then your paint. Be sure to tape off the mirror so no paint gets on it.
Be sure to use Frog paint and remove it while the paint is still slightly wet (or score with a razor). I'd definitely clean it first, prime and then paint. You'll want to use a smaller detail brush for some of the smaller areas.
Have you considered spray painting it? That's what I would probably do!
I would try painting the frame with a silver or gray chalk paint. The paint is made for refinishing furniture, so it should adhere well to your frame.
Rub mirror frame down to give a "key" then paint silver or spray it.
