How should I decorate the wall behind my wood burning stove stove-pipe? It has a small mantle (white) and the same dark grey tile directly behind the stove that is also under the stove. The wall is currently pale blue.

It has to be fire-safe ( cement board; no drywall or wood) and the stove can't be closer than 12" from the wall. I built a stone wall for mine

If it suits your taste and budget, consider soapstone as an option. 1). It looks fantastic and has historic presence in this application. 2). It absorbs the heat while the stove is hot, when the stove and the room starts cooling, the soapstone releases that stored warmth back into the room. 3). Soapstone is a natural material, not man-made, if that's an issue for you.

Man made stone that is flat on one side is easily attached to cement board using thin set cement adhesive. After it cures fill in gaps using a bag sold for apply grout(thin set cement). Stones are sold at building /home improvement stores.
