You can take digital photos of them and upload them to your computer. If you don't want them donate them to an organization that does genealogy like Family Search.
I have used all my photos as decor. Every one of my walls in my home is filled with matted and framed family/special interest photos. I get lots of compliments and my visitors love seeing my life on my walls. And I can change them periodically for a new look.
I would scan them in and donate the originals. You could probably sell them, as that's where quite a few end up. You'd be amazed at the cost of vintage photos on Etsy and Ebay. They can also be used for crafts.
One of the best display of old photos is take an old window and tape the photos face down, overlaying them to fill up every pane of the window. Then put a backing on top of each pane; add a hanger and put on the wall like a large picture.
A gallery wall or some collages would look great. Ancestry.com would be able to track down relatives who would love to inherit them!
