    Anything that sits flush and can be sealed to prevent water absorption could work. I always wanted to do a glass mosaic for my backsplash using colorful broken glass. Its still in my mental planning stages, but maybe someday...

    You can cut pallets up and stain with different colors and seal the boards. You would have to stager them and cut all ends flush but it would be pretty.
