What is the story on this urn?

Rita

It weights approx. 11 lbs, a flee market find, solid case iron, it is known to be sold in sets of two. I would like to know if it has any value?

Are there any markings on the bottom?

Cast iron will have no great value. Best used in patio and outdoor settings. These type of urn pieces are generally 'funereal' in nature, styled from Victorian period. Yours most likely 1940's decorative piece. I think the painting of it actually lessens it appeal, i would chemically strip it and use it in a patio or garden setting. Not a rare piece, and with the kind of "italianesque' cherub decoration it makes it a bit common. What you paid for it at the flea market is it's 'going market value'.'

@Johnchip Thank you. Thats is good information now I know just where to display my urn. I believe I can say this story has been resolved. This was a great experience for me, I didn't know what to expect. I now feel comfortable posting some other questionable items for feedback.

Best guess, it is a garden urn. More than likely it came as a pair. The ornate markings and raised releif suggest french, but don't quote me on that. The marking is more than likely in the raised releif, if there is one. Good luck on that.

Are they urns for people's ashes?
    • Rita Rita on Jan 14, 2016
@karen eiler Hopefully not this one. As I mentioned before it is solid and very heavy with no indication of it being sealed, painted, or and there is no opening or hole for an opening to be sealed. I really want to thank everyone for there information and help. I guess one day soon decide what to do with it
