Bathroom walls have holes and deep grooves that make it impossible to have smooth walls. How do I refinish those walls with texture?

My stairwell was scratched and gouged. I used drywall mud and a trowel to texture it. It looks like stucco now and it was fast to complete. I just swiped it on in each patterns.
Hello. I recently purchase a texture paint. It is a thicker paint that is between compound and paint. I also bought a special roller to use to create a wood like texture. You apply the textured paint with a regular roller first (working in smaller sections) and then go over it with the textured roller.
