Wallpaper backing- do i have to remove the backing to paint?

Trying to remove wallpaper. Thought this would be fairly simple but as with all projects we under estimate the complexity / hard labor involved. So i've tried just about every thing I have been told and found on the internet. Wall paper was fairly easy (you see I said fairly initially it gave me the blues also) Anywho, the darn glue backing is not budging. I find that i'm tearing into the sheet rock covering trying to get it off. QUESTION, do i have to remove the backing to paint? I was thinking about using a textured roller and just paint over it. I'm exhausted.

Yes, you have to remove the backing unless you want to skim coat the entire wall.

To save money, use hot water to remove most of the paper and glue and then apply a small amount of the gel at the end to remove the most stubborn paste and backing. A scoring tool punches hundreds of tiny holes in the wallpaper facing so the water can penetrate the backing.

I do wallpaper removal and painting for folks, if you leave the backing paper on, you take the chance it will bubble up and look a complete mess. Soldier on and try sanding the glue off with an electric sander is my go to solution. Don't worry if you rip up the drywall, you can skim coat it with joint compound and make it good again.

I ran into this exact problem years ago. Apparently (in my case) the people who put up the wallpaper did it with something other than wallpaper adhesive. And it took off the sheetrock! Trying to repair sheetrock is almost impossible. We ended up replacing some areas of sheetrock altogether!

Yes, you can paint over it. Generally you want to remove wallpaper because it might peel away under the pant, causing the paint to come away. Obviously you aren't going to have that problem with this wallpaper! Make sure it is clean (wipe down with vinegar is a good idea) and paint away!
