How can I cut a scrap piece of outdoor carpet into runner & seal edges

I have a large piece of indoor/outdoor carpeting and want to cut a 10' length x 4' wide runner, how can I seal the edges so it will not fray? I was thinking of alot of caulk and just pressing it down to make a "rubber" edge but not sure if it will stay. Any ideas? I am also going to stencil it when done.

Actually if you go to the craft stores they sell a product to stop fraying.

My thought would be glue it down with adhesive recommended by the manufacturer and then cut wood trim to go around it, which would give protection to the raw edges and character to the custom carpet runner.

Five years ago, I had to cut off a piece of carpeting that was on our porch stairs. Amazingly the edge on the porch itself has not frayed even though it is in a high traffic spot.

How about turning the carpet upside down and hot gluing binding to the edges? Just be careful not to get the glue on the floor..do little triangles on the corners to double protect the corners.

Carpet stores can bind the edges for you, and they usually do a good job. This type of carpet often has a glued like construction and won't easily fray. We just carpeted our screened porch and used a utility knife to cut it and there was absolutely no fraying.
