Hi. There are numerous products out there for this problems. These come in spray can applications. Some have a slight amber tone, others don't. If you google, you can watch a bunch of videos. Easy peasy.

You can buy rubber strips to put on the top edges of the steps.

I bought that rubber type shelf liner. It comes in various widths. I made a template out of butcher paper (you can use brown mailing paper from WalMart, post office, or party store). I measured the stairs for length and width. The rubber mat material is easily cut with scissors. I rolled out my chosen color (beige), placed my template over the non-slip shelf/drawer lining material. I had to cut 15 of them, placed each one on my stairs So far there have been no problems. They lift up easily to sweep the stairs or vacuum. Every now and again I do treat the stairs to Murphy's Oil for wood. Follow up by replacing the mats to the steps. You can buy the "waffle mat" at most Dollar Stores, Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, Dollar General, WalMart. Hope this helps. Another use for this is on fireplace mantles. It keeps decorator items from slipping. I even use it on my coffee table, end tables as non-slip "grippers". I also cut it instead of felt for my natural stone bookends, vase bottoms. This material has HUNDREDS of uses. I used it in my spouses work bench, tool box, in his truck on the dashboard to keep his cellphone or anything he lays on the dash actually, even papers, from sliding off. I also use it in our personal vehicles, our travel trailers, like I said hundreds of uses besides shelf liner.
