Any suggestions on how to deal with the rug. My sister said to put darker area rug over it. Not dure what is best

Put an area rug over it that you like and fits you style until you can change the floor. When I bought my home twenty plus years ago the living room had a light beige carpet in it (Why would they do that). I couldn't change it at the time. I bought a large area rug to cover it. Over a four year period I had carpet cleaned professionally, but it never really came clean. I even cleaned it myself once. I finally got fed up putting money out to get it cleaned. It was time to remodel the whole room. Fireplace redo, paint walls, etc. I pulled up a corner of the carpet and found beautiful maple hardwood floors in good shape. So I removed the carpeting and finished the maple floor. Still use a smaller area rug, but no light carpet to clean.
