tomatoes need a minimum of 5 gallon of a good potting mix in a container at least 12 inches high for the roots. there are fertilizers blended for tomatoes- read and follow package directions. you may need to supplement with magnesium - Epsom salt, and lime- calcuim. the mag supports the flower's that start the tomatoes, the lime is to avert end blossom rot. they will need consistent watering- i put mine on an irrigation system...well worth it. when the flowers appear you will get more tomatoes if you hand pollinate the blossoms. not hard to do-very gently touch the stamen of 1 plant with a soft artist brush and touch the stamens of the other plants.tomatoes do better if staked up....there are many ways to do this, find the one that fits your garden best.as for the "best" that's all subjective....i prefrer heirloom varieties, and canning type tomatoes. don't for get to pull the suckers off - those little branches that start growing in the crook between the stalk and a branch. its a week point on the plant.Helpful Reply -
