I have a northwest facing balcony, recessed with a roof, walls and a four foot front wall and a wooden top rail. I would like some ideas for plants and decorating for next summer. Our summer temps run from 65 to 104 degrees depending on conditions.

How much light does your balcony get? I know you can grow a lot of things during those long days of Alaskan summer, but the light may be an issue if you want things that flower.

If you are thinking indoors, I'll tell you that north is hard for houseplantsest, because that is my main direction also. Peace lilies generally do well enough, but don't fertilize them and if you have hard or salty water, you should plan on collecting rain water. If you do that, and can afford a hanging grow light, you can grow orchids! There are plenty that are not too fussy, they'll bloom in the fall and sometimes again in the spring. I just water mine thuroughly once a week and mist them when I walk by!

I have indoor plants now,duval.26, and hard water, but thank you for some great ideas! Douglas Hunt, this will of course be for next season, but my balcony is recessed, shadowed in parts with the front wall so I get clear light but no sun. I may have to go with greenery as I didn't think of the no direct sun problem. I recently moved in so this will be all new to me.
